After years of running the show on a standard Raspbery Pi, we hit the limit of what the USB bus could handle. It was time to build somthing custom.

The Problem

Our previous controller suffered from data lag when we exceeded 3,000 pixels. The frame rate would drop from 40fps to 15fps during complex sequences.

The Solution

  • Switched to an ESP32-based microcontroller.
  • Designed a custom PCB for power distribution.
  • Implemented WLED for easier control via WiFi.

The Result

The new box is waterproof, runs at a solid 60fps, and has room for expansion up to 10,000 pixels.
